What is a VPN leak?

A VPN is supposed to route all of your traffic through an encrypted tunnel so that websites and your internet provider only see the VPN server's IP address — not yours. A VPN leak happens when part of your traffic escapes that tunnel and exposes your real IP address, location or DNS requests. You can be connected to a VPN and still be leaking. This test checks the most common leaks in seconds, right in your browser.

WebRTC leak

WebRTC is a feature built into Chrome, Firefox, Edge and other browsers for real-time voice and video. To connect peers directly, it can ask a public STUN server for your real public IP address — outside the VPN tunnel. If your real IP shows up in the WebRTC test above while you are connected to a VPN, websites can see who you really are.

IPv6 leak

Many VPNs only tunnel IPv4 traffic. If your network also has IPv6 and the VPN does not handle it, your IPv6 address can leak directly to websites. A properly built VPN either tunnels IPv6 too or disables it while connected.

DNS leak

Every time you open a website, your device asks a DNS server to translate the name into an IP address. If those requests go to your provider instead of the VPN, your provider can still see every site you visit. A trustworthy VPN routes DNS through its own encrypted resolvers.

How to fix VPN leaks

  • Use a VPN that blocks WebRTC and IPv6 leaks at the app level — not just in the browser.
  • Turn on the VPN's kill switch so traffic is cut if the tunnel drops.
  • Disable WebRTC in your browser if you never make in-browser calls.

Does this test store my IP address?

No. The test runs in your browser and the IP lookup is not logged. We only read what your connection already sends to every website you visit.

Why does the test show a leak even with my VPN on?

Because a connected VPN indicator does not guarantee that every channel is tunneled. WebRTC and IPv6 are the usual culprits — they can bypass a VPN that does not explicitly block them.

Is a free VPN enough to prevent leaks?

Many free VPNs leak WebRTC/IPv6 or log your activity. Leak protection, a kill switch and private DNS are what actually keep you covered.
